Student classification refers to the familiar names for the four undergraduate years: freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior. Your classification is not determined by the number of years of college coursework you have taken but by the number of semester hours you have earned.

Student Classification Summary
If you have earned…then you are a…
0-29 semester hoursfirst-year student
30-59 semester hourssecond-year student (sophomore)
60-89 semester hoursthird-year student (junior)
90 or more semester hoursfourth-year student (senior)

Non-degree students (A9) may enroll having previously earned any number of semester hours.
